You are not far from the kingdom of God (Mk 12.34)
The scribe realized that the commandments to love God and neighbour were greater than any sacrifice or offering. He was a wise man. Jesus told him, you are not far from the kingdom of God. Why didn’t Jesus tell this scribe, “You have arrived! You have reached the kingdom of God”?
The scribe in this incidence was faithful to the Law. But Jesus saw that this man was not yet ready for the next step: the revelation that Jesus is more than human, He is God’s presence among us. Therefore Jesus left him at that. All that Jesus could tell him was: You are not far from the kingdom of God (Mk 12.34).
Coming to us: We know who Jesus is. We are trying to follow him. But he is calling us further. He is asking us to “persevere in running the race that lies before us” (Hebrews 12.1). It’s a long race that calls for patience, endurance, and fortitude. If we stop at the minimum, we’ll be missing the next opportunity for grace and growth that God has in store for us.
Let us be sure that our heavenly Father always has more for us. “We are always only at the beginning of love,” so describes a spiritual writer.
Be sure, Jesus is pleased with you right now. Like a good coach, Jesus sees how much you have already done, and he is proud of you! He wants to see you overcome the next hurdle, hit that new goal, and get that much closer to the finish line. He is committed to taking you there. Just stay with Him every day, and keep your eyes fixed on Him. Looking at us let Jesus exclaim, You have reached.
