The Samaritan woman at the well and Jesus asking her for a drink – we are all too familiar with the scene. There is no condemnation. Jesus knows what sort of a woman she is. As the narrative unfolds, he reveals to her how she lived her past: five husbands and now with one who is not her husband. Yet, there is no
condemnation. A British princess was treated graciously by a shop clerk. She told his employer of his deference to her station. The puzzled shopkeeper said, "Princess, he treats everyone the same way." One reason the Father humanized His Son in the person of Jesus was to allow us to find a divine person eminently approachable. Jesus is sensitive and warm. The reader can just about extend a hand and feel the Teacher. We can latch onto Him in happy days but also in blue, pricky, guilty days. The woman is not named. That means, she is a type in the description representing us sinners. Slip your name into the blank spot. There is room for every one of us.

 He and the twelve were only into the second of their three day journey. They had probably covered thirty blistering miles. The party finally came to a deep well fed by a fresh spring of delicious cool water. It was near the town of Sychar. The Samaritan woman found herself attracted to this Jesus. Why was she so swept off her feet by the Man at the well? This was not the first man she had met. If anything, she was an authority on men. Jesus gently reminded her of her past. Professional prostitute though she might be, Jesus engaged this woman as an equal. He showered her with kindness and treated her as a princess. This type of deference she had never received from any of her clients. They had treated her like white trash. He realized the truth of the aphorism that while words can't break bones, they can break hearts. Jesus saw in her not the evil she had done but rather the heroine she could become with His encouragement. Do you believe Jesus will not forgive your sins? Recall the sinner who asked the monk: "Will Jesus really forgive me?" The monk asked: "Do you throw away dirty clothes?" "No." "Then neither will Jesus throw you away. No matter what your past, your future is spotless." Come and drink a glass of cool well water with Jesus.

"മനുഷ്യൻ ഒരുപ്രാവശ്യം മരിക്കണം അതിനുശേഷം വിധി എന്ന് നിശ്ചയിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു"      (ഹെബ്രാ 9:27-28)

കത്തോലിക്കാ തിരുസഭയിൽ മരണം മൂലം വേർപിരിഞ്ഞു പോയിട്ടുള്ള ആത്മാക്കളെ പ്രത്യേകമായി അനുസ്മരിക്കുന്ന കാലഘട്ടമാണ് നവംബർ മാസം. സ്വർഗ്ഗത്തിലെ വിശുദ്ധരുടെ വിജയ സഭയും ഭൂമിയിൽ ജീവിക്കുന്നവരുടെ സമര സഭയും ശുദ്ധീകരണസ്ഥലത്തിലെ വിശുദ്ധീകരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നവരുടെ സഹന സഭയും ചേരുന്നതാണ് വിശുദ്ധ കത്തോലിക്കസഭ. ഇതാണ് പുണ്യവാന്മാരുടെ ഐക്യം. വിശുദ്ധ കുർബാനയിൽ വിശ്വാസപ്രമാണത്തിൽ നാം ഇത് ഏറ്റുപറഞ്ഞ് പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്.

നവംബർ ഒന്നാം തീയതി സകല വിശുദ്ധരുടെയും തിരുനാൾ തിരുസഭയിൽ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. മരണസമയത്തെ വിധിയിലൂടെ ഒരു വ്യക്തി ഒന്നുകിൽ സ്വർഗത്തിലോ നരകത്തിലോ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ശുദ്ധീകരണസ്ഥലത്തിലോ എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നു. ഇതിനെയാണ് തനതു വിധി  എന്ന് പറയുന്നത്. മരണശേഷം ലാസറിനും   ധനവാനും സംജാതമാകുന്ന അവസ്ഥയും ( ലൂക്കാ 16: 22-23) "നീ ഇന്ന് എന്നോടുകൂടെ പറുദീസയിൽ ആയിരിക്കുമെന്ന്" നല്ല കള്ളനോട് ഈശോ അരുളി ചെയ്യുന്നതും ( ലൂക്കാ 23:43) തനതു വിധി വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്ന സുവിശേഷ ഭാഗങ്ങൾ ആണ്. ഈ ലോക ജീവിതത്തിൽ പുണ്യപ്രവൃത്തികൾ ചെയ്തു ജീവിച്ചു മരണശേഷം സ്വർഗ്ഗത്തിൽ എത്തിയിരിക്കുന്ന ആത്മാക്കളാണ് വിശുദ്ധർ. അവരിൽ രക്തസാക്ഷികൾ, വേദപാരംഗതന്മാർ, മെത്രാന്മാർ, പുരോഹിതന്മാർ, ശുശ്രൂഷികൾ എന്നിവർ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. അവർ സ്വർഗ്ഗത്തിൽ ദൈവത്തെ മുഖാമുഖം കണ്ടുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നവരാണ്. അതിനാൽ അവരോട് നാം മാധ്യസ്ഥ്യം യാചിക്കുകയാണ് ചെയ്യേണ്ടത്.

മരണശേഷം തനതു വിധിയിലൂടെ ശുദ്ധീകരണസ്ഥലത്തിൽ ആയിരിക്കുന്ന ആത്മാക്കൾക്ക് വേണ്ടി പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുന്ന ദിവസമാണ് നവംബർ രണ്ടാം തീയതി. ഭൂമിയിൽ ആയിരിക്കുന്ന കാലത്ത് ചെയ്ത ചെറിയ തെറ്റുകൾക്കുള്ള താൽക്കാലിക ശിക്ഷയിൽനിന്ന് വിടുതൽനേടി സ്വർഗ്ഗത്തിൽ പ്രവേശിക്കുവാൻ ദൈവം നൽകുന്ന അവസരമാണ് ശുദ്ധീകരണസ്ഥലം. അത്തരം ആത്മാക്കൾക്കാണ് നമ്മുടെ പ്രാർത്ഥനകൾ കൊണ്ടും അവർക്കുവേണ്ടിയുള്ള  മരണാനന്തര കർമ്മങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടും പ്രയോജനം ഉണ്ടാകുന്നത്. അവരുടെ ശുദ്ധീകരണ പ്രവൃത്തിയെ ത്വരിതപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിന് ഭൂമിയിൽ നിന്നുള്ള നമ്മുടെ പ്രാർത്ഥനകൾക്ക് കഴിവുണ്ട്. മക്കബായരുടെ രണ്ടാം പുസ്തകത്തിൽ യൂദാസ് എന്ന  സൈന്യാധിപൻ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ മരിച്ച തന്റെ പടയാളികൾക്ക് വേണ്ടി പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുന്ന ഭാഗം വിവരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പുനരുത്ഥാനം ഉണ്ട്  എന്ന ഉറപ്പിലാണ് യൂദാസ് ഇപ്രകാരം ചെയ്തത് ( 2 മക്ക :42-45). ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് വേണ്ടി നാം എപ്രകാരം പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുന്നുവോ അതേ തീക്ഷ്ണതയോടും ആത്മാർത്ഥതയോടും കൂടി ശുദ്ധീകരണസ്ഥലത്തിലെ ആത്മാക്കൾക്കു വേണ്ടിയും നമുക്ക് പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കാം.

വിശുദ്ധ കുർബാന അർപ്പിച്ചു കൊണ്ടും, വലിയ ഒപ്പീസും ചെറിയ  ഒപ്പീസും  ചൊല്ലി കൊണ്ടും, 'മരിച്ച വിശ്വാസികളുടെ'പ്രാർത്ഥന അഞ്ചുപ്രാവശ്യം,   40 'സ്വർഗ്ഗസ്ഥനായ പിതാവേ',  ജപമാലയിലെ 'ഓ എന്റെ ഈശോയെ'  എന്നീ ജപങ്ങളിലൂടെയും നമുക്ക് മരണംമൂലം വേർപെട്ടുപോയവർക്കുവേണ്ടി പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കാം. 

‘Because it is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins church offers her suffrages for them’ (Vat II, Lumen Gentium: 50)
